Intent
At Upperby Primary School we not only actively promote the social, spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils – they sit at the very heart of everything we do! Establishing a strong school ethos supported by effective relationships throughout the school, and providing relevant activities beyond the classroom to ensure pupils’ development. We promote the fundamental British values. Our pupils understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law. Our pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance.
Implementation
At Upperby Primary School, we use the guidance materials from the Lancashire Grid for Learning. The Live Well, Learn Well pack develops key skills, knowledge and understanding through different units of work across Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. (The majority of resources we use to deliver each unit are from Scarf Coram Life Education). Each area is taught at an age-appropriate level. All children cover each unit but the content detail may vary. The wider school curriculum also plays a part in the delivery of this subject across the school as do our whole school assemblies and class circle times. As appropriate whole-school themes are used to deliver messages within PSHE. British Values are embedded into the lessons that we teach. Each year Relationships and/ or Sex Education is delivered in each year group.
Impact
The pupils are assessed against the performance descriptors for each year group which have been carefully mapped out ensuring the skills in PSHE are progressive. Assessment information is used to inform further curriculum developments and provision is adapted accordingly. The subject leader monitors assessments and provides support for staff to ensure continued progress.
What is Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE) Education?
PSHE education is a planned programme that supports and enhances the learning and development of children and young people. The programme allows children to acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives, now and in the future.
At Upperby Primary School we want all children to successfully develop qualities, skills and attributes they need to thrive as happy children and pupils, well-rounded individuals, and family members and members of society. Our You Can Do It and PSHE programmes play a vital role in supporting positive development.
PSHE prepares our children to manage many of the most important and critical opportunities they will face growing up. They learn how to deal with life challenges, face difficulties head on and become responsible for their actions and behaviour in such a rapidly challenging and changing time. PSHE helps children to apply the knowledge and understanding they learn in all subjects to practical, real-life situations while helping them to feel safe and secure enough to fulfill their academic potential.
