At Upperby Primary school we aim to ensure that all of our pupils have access to a computing curriculum in order for them to understand and participate in a world that is ever increasingly influenced by technology. We want to develop our pupils so they are able to adapt in an every changing technological world. We believe the knowledge, skills and understanding taught through our curriculum will empower our pupils to become more computer literate[.  Through this they become more able to conceptualise, understand and use computer-based technology, and so are better prepared for today’s world and future.

Computing lessons ensure that the pupils are able to gain a more secure understanding of the knowledge and skills within our curriculum. However, when appropriate, computing may be used as a vehicle for the children to present their learning in other subjects.  Computing lessons cover all three strands of the National Curriculum; Digital Literacy, Information Technology and Computer Science.  Online Safety is taught throughout the year as appropriate. The school uses the condensed curriculum from Kapow as a vehicle to teach computing skills.

Internet safety is a priority at Upperby Primary School. Internet safety days each half term focus on a different theme, building on prior knowledge.  Using resources from the Project Evolve scheme of work supports our teaching by providing children with real life scenarios. This is further supported by The National Online Safety website for resources. Staff and children have access to a range of hardware and software to support them with teaching and learning in computing including; tablets, PC’s laptops and programmable robots.

The pupils are assessed against the performance descriptors for each year groups which have been carefully mapped out. Skills and understanding in Computing are progressive and build year on year. Assessment information is used to inform future learning opportunities and curriculum developments.  The subject leader monitors assessments and provides support for staff to ensure continued progress.
